    Deceptive Marketing?, January 8, 2016

I am rating this a one star because it is more likely to be read.

My review is based on the two lens version of this product, that is sold by Beach Camera. The 18-55MM lens is available in two forms: VR and ED. Typically the ED version runs from $20 to $50 cheaper; it is still a good lens, it’s just not considered as valuable as the VR version. I noticed that the product description differed from the product images, and my suspicion proved correct. Take the question/answers with a grain of salt – I asked and got the answer the 18-55MM lens would be a VR. It seems however, if you order the two lens version, you receive two ED lenses, the 18-55MM is the ED version and not the 18-55MM VR. The product description is correct, the product image is not; in one shot it shows a 18-55 MM VR, in another the ED form. I leave it to you to decide if that is simply an error, or intentionally deceptive. Certainly, it would not be the first time one of the NY/NJ photo equipment dealers played the Bait and Switch game. Since right now Costco has D3300s on sale for $450, this will be the only time I ever do business with Beach Camera. There are just too many alternatives where this type of thing doesn’t happen.

This model is an okay Nikon. Hunt out the review by Ken Rockwell for details. It usually out-scores it main competitor, the Canon EOS Rebel 5, which is the only reason I have not bought yet another Canon. Right now, I am using this one mainly to document invertebrate fossils for a bunch of paleontologists. It will usually sit on a tripod, focused into a light-box, which is why I am not going to war over the VR/ED lens issue. For my purposes the ED is better optically, for someone shooting their kids on the soccer field that would not be true. Image quality in the environment I am shooting in is exceptional. I am having to do no clean-up on the computer, and yet can still make out the grains of fine grit on some of the fossils; clarity is still good at 300%. That form of photography may seem alien to some, but it is a growing field – undramatic, but steady. Thousands of museums are trying to put at least their best artifacts on the web. The museum I am working with has 700,000 artifacts it wants to digitize, usually with multiple exposures, each. And it is only one, fairly good regional museum, in one city, in one state.

As to the camera itself, I don’t believe these are actually ‘refurbished’ cameras. This model came out during the Great Recession. Nikon was struggling with rising competition from happy-snap tablets, and I think sales didn’t come in where they thought. I think some of these, including the one I received, were ‘refurbished’ by moving them into boxes marked refurbished, or possibly by simply putting refurbished tags on the original boxes. Hard to face your dealers when you undercut them selling ‘new’ at close-out prices. In any case, the one I received was unused. I have purchased refurbished equipment for over 40 years – this ain’t that.

I have exercised the camera and both lenses very thoroughly, no problems at all. I also downloaded and installed the app for the wireless adapter that is part of the two lens kit. The app is amazingly simple and easy to use, far and away the quickest setup and connection to a remote device that I have ever experienced with my (Samsung) Android tablet. The camera handles it without difficulty. Bad news is using it will drain your camera battery very quickly, so if you want to go that way, plan on buying extras. It does allow you to release the shutter from the tablet, it does not allow you to manipulate controls like setting f-stops or shutter-speeds from there. Basically, you set up the camera for the shot you want, and then push the shutter release from the tablet. It does allow you to view your photos on the larger tablet screen. Until the camera battery goes dead.

The camera bag that comes with the two lens kit is a cheap bag that they threw in to make it look like a nice kit. I also purchased an Amazon Basics camera bag, and that bag is orders of magnitude better than the kit bag, and the Amazon bag is, well…, Basic.

Documentation is pretty poor. It comes with all the manuals, but you will probably want to buy or borrow from the library a book on this model. I actually used a library Dummies for the D3300, and it covered pretty much everything on the D3200, and revealed the D3300 had no new features I had any use for. I’m pretty comfortable with DSLRs, so I found all I needed was a quick run thru the way Nikon implemented them. No surprises, they just use different buttons and put the buttons different places than Canon, which is usually what I buy.

This model of Nikon produces a NEF (Nikon’s RAW image) that requires Photoshop Elements of release 10 or higher. I know it takes higher than Adobe RAW 6.5, which is the highest level that works with PsE 9…
